(Mahabharata effect)
*Arjun:* Vasudeva! Why do we eat food?
*Lord Krishn:* He Partha, food is the need of the body. We eat food to satisfy our hunger.
*Arjun:* What do we get from food?
*Lord Krishn:* Nutrients are obtained from food. Food has two basic functions.
1) To provide various elements to the body for proper growth of the body -
2) Providing energy to the body -
*Arjun:* What are nutrients?
*Shrikrushn:* Nutrient is a substance that is needed to keep a living thing alive and to help it to grow.
*Arjun:* Is the nutrient one or many? If they are many, then how many types are there?
*Lord Krishn:* There are 7 major types of nutrients. *Macronutrients*- like Carbohydrates, proteins and fats; and *Micronutrients-* Vitamins, salts, fiber and water. Total 7 types of nutrients are essential for living.
*Arjun:* They all come from the same type of food or each food type has different nutrients?
*Srikrishn:* Parth,
*Carbohydrates-* It is obtained from monocot grains like jawar, where, maize, rice etc.
*Protein -* Obtained from various pulses i.e. dicotyledonous grains.
*Fat-* Obtained from fats like milk, dairy products, oils, eggs, meat etc.
*Vitamins-* Obtained from green leafy vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, etc.
*Minerals-* Vegetables, water etc.
*Dietary Fibrous-* Vegetables, fruits etc.
*Arjun:* Does consuming a nutrient in excess benefit the body?
*Shrikrishn:* Proper balance of these nutrients in the diet is very important. Excessive intake of a nutrient can be harmful to the body. For example, excessive intake of fats and carbohydrates can lead to disorders such as obesity and heart disease. On the other hand, if a nutrient is not consumed at all, its deficiency can also lead to disease. For example, lack of 'vitamin -A' in small amounts can lead to 'night blindness'. It is beneficial to have a proper 'balanced diet'.
*Arjun:* What is a balanced diet?
*Lord Krishn:* A balanced diet is a diet that provides you with energy rich foods like carbohydrates, fats, essential nutrients like body proteins, salts and vitamins.
*Arjun:* What is the importance of a balanced diet?
*Lord Krishn:* A balanced diet is very important for proper nutrition of the body, for it to remain functional and healthy.
*Arjun*: Vasudev! Most nutrients are obtained from plants. So where do they come from in plants?
*Lord Krishn:* From the soil. Plants absorb the nutrients in the soil through the roots and convert them into nutrients. These nutrients are transmitted from plants to animals. When an animal dies, these elements decompose and return to the soil. This is a cyclical action. From soil to plant, plant to animal and again from animal to soil, *This is the law of nature*
He Parth, let's stop here. I will answer the rest of your questions in the next section tomorrow. See you tomorrow. Until then, read this part over and over again.
